Differential effects of elevated p CO 2 and warming on marine phytoplankton stoichiometry

چکیده
Phytoplankton stand at the base of marine food-web, and play a major role in global carbon cycling. Rising CO2 levels temperatures are expected to enhance growth alter carbon:nutrient stoichiometry phytoplankton, with possible consequences for functioning food-webs oceanic pump. To date, however, consistency phytoplankton stoichiometric responses remains unclear. We therefore performed meta-analysis on data from experimental studies elevated pCO2 3–5° warming under nutrient replete limited conditions. Our results demonstrate that increased overall C:N (by 4%) C:P 9%) molar ratios conditions, as well rates 6%). Nutrient limitation amplified effect ratios, increases 27% 17%, respectively. In contrast pCO2, did not consistently elemental composition. This could be attributed species- study-specific decreases response warming. While our observed moderate CO2-driven changes likely drive marked food web functioning, they same order magnitude current projected estimations export. Therefore, may indicate compensation mechanism reduced export due declining primary production near future.

Irradiance and the elemental stoichiometry of marine phytoplankton
We analyzed the elemental composition (C, N, P, S, K, Mg, Ca, Sr, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Co, Mo, and Ni) of five marine phytoplankton species representing the four major marine phyla grown over a range of growth irradiances. We found substantial variability in the elemental composition between different species, which is consistent with previously reported differences associated with evolutionary hist...
متن کاملMarine phytoplankton viruses at elevated CO2
During the PEeCE III mesocosm experiment in 2005 we investigated how the virio-plankton community responded to increased levels of nutrients (N and P) and CO 2. We applied a combination of flow cytometry, Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis and degenerated PCR primers to categorize and quantify individual viral populations, and to 5 investigate their temporal dynamics. Species specific and degener...
متن کاملEffects of CO2 Enrichment on Marine Phytoplankton
Rising atmospheric CO2 and deliberate CO2 sequestration in the ocean change seawater carbonate chemistry in a similar way, lowering seawater pH, carbonate ion concentration and carbonate saturation state and increasing dissolved CO2 concentration. These changes affect marine plankton in various ways. On the organismal level, a moderate increase in CO2 facilitates photosynthetic carbon fixation ...

Marine ecosystems are very diversified and involved in a complicated net of internal and external intercommunications. Their evolutionary history and present adaptive possibilities strongly depend on variability of climate conditions. Ocean basins in equatorial, tropical, and moderate zones are distinguished by the stability of environmental parameters and less affected by climatic anomalies. O...
